TiSp Work Samples

Work Sample 1. Minis - Poetic Animations (excerpts)(1’23”)

This series of animations delves into the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of memories. The backgrounds are watercolour paintings of disused or decayed spaces, once vibrant with life. I am fascinated by how we connect to these spaces and the memories they evoke, reflecting our shared and personal histories.

The animations are digitally hand-drawn, with a minimalist character style loosely inspired by Father and Daughter by Michael Dudok De Wit. The simplicity and lack of facial features shift the focus to the interplay between the figures and their surroundings, emphasising the transient relationship between humans and the environments that shape their stories.

Work Sample 2. Fragments - Conceptual Framework (0’51”)

Fragments is a work in progress that delves into the interplay between memory and how personal and collective stories shape our perception of reality. The project began its R&D phase in the summer of 2024 when I transitioned to working full-time from a mobile studio on the road.

This short WIP excerpt highlights an encounter with an old trucker who shared memories of his life on the road. Through intertwining narrative vignettes with my personal journey—both physical and artistic—the project aims to weave together fragments of individual experiences into a larger tapestry.

Going forward once refined, where relevant, these may include bits of animation, or further sound design, and music inspired by the ambient surroundings or the voices themselves.

The ambient sounds, videos, and photographs in this excerpt were captured in the trucker's local area using a camera and portable recorder. The material was mixed in LogicPro and edited in DaVinci Resolve.

3. Fragments - Journey Documentation (1’40”)

Central to my process is the concept of nomadic residencies, where creation is deeply informed by a place, its culture, its people, and their stories. This approach reflects my belief that art is enriched through interactions and immersion in diverse environments.

A key element of my practice since being on the road is to document the creative process itself—revealing how inspiration evolves in changing contexts and the challenges of working on the road. This behind-the-scenes content serves not only as a personal record but also as part of the narrative structure, layering the act of creation with the storytelling itself, as demonstrated in the previous sample.  This aligns well with the purpose of the TiSp residency.

This excerpt is a short WIP sample showcasing this documentation - the genesis of Fragments and the ideas underpinning it. Shot within the confines of my van/studio, it reflects my journey—both physical and artistic—while offering a glimpse into the process of crafting this project.

4. Soundscapes (1’03”)

This series of audio works reflects my interest in merging music, field recordings, and storytelling to capture places and experiences. Presented as three short snippets, each piece explores a unique narrative:

  1. Incidental Music: A composition for electric guitar, voice samples, and excerpts from a radio show interview on the concept of incidental music.

  2. Valencia After the Floods: A soundscape documenting the aftermath of recent floods in Valencia, combining prepared acoustic guitar, field recordings, and layered samples.

  3. The Orchard: A narrative piece recounting my encounter with a woman tending her orchard, intertwining acoustic guitar and ambient field recordings.

Each work was recorded and produced in my mobile studio, using a blend of field recordings, voice samples, music recording, and digital layering techniques on a DAW. These pieces serve as precursors to the auditory elements I aim to develop further, where sound will be tied to visual storytelling.
